To reach the more advanced tech, you must research a certain amount of technologies of the previous tier. “Tech-tree” is divided into four sectors – science/exploration, economy/production, military and state/society development. Planets, droids raise production by a fixed amount per planet, etc.ĭepending on what planets you have, each system has a different Bio-domes increase food output on all barren Is it worth to overpopulate the planet, sacrificing happiness over efficiency? Or maybe it’s better to assign a planet certain specialty to increase the output? Or change the climate altogether?Įntire star system. Thus assigning population becomes your primary concern. All resources are produced only on the planets and each one has a different rate of production. You can’t cultivate an area of vacuum as you did with the lands around the city. Of course, Endless Space 2 isn’t just a copy of Sid Meyer’s masterpiece. Except, you can not only negotiate with them for resources and support but also assimilate them – by force or peacefully.

Instead of the continents – constellations, that have all their stars connected by fast-travel “space strings”. For all we know, each of our turns takes millennia or just a few years. Not to mention that just like Civ, everything is counted in “units” or “points” – there is no relation to any real metrics. Food to grow the population, Production to build, Science to discover new technologies, and even Dust as universal currency to buy things – these main resources are used in the same manner. Endless Space 2 still feels like Civ in many ways. Civilization in Space (II)Īs for the core gameplay, developers decided not to fix that was working. One of the reasons why quite a few teams decided to dive into spaceĤX, contributing to turn-based 4X renaissance. With very little resources, aside from personal experience in the industry and passion towards deep turn-based strategy, developers managed to create quite an engaging game, that was probably most close to Civilization series. So, people were quite hungry for a new opportunity to conquer the galaxy. And even GalCiv had some strange design decisions, like having planets scattered all over the star map.

Aside from the over-complicated Space Empire, Galactic Civilizations was probably the only 4X space strategy series that managed to gain even relative popularity. Results are carefully monitored, however, and as mechanical control of the "Cloth" worn by every Vodyani is in the hands of the Church, there is little room for independent thought, much less rebellion. When Amplitude released Endless Space in 2012, it didn’t have much competition. Prayer, recitation, and study are important parts of everyday life, and as study involves ruins, relics, and ancient technology much of their religious activity has pragmatic consequences. As they were saved from extinction by the technology of the Virtual Endless, it is only natural that they in turn worship these all-powerful precursors as gods. Vodyani society is organized as a formal and hierarchical church that worships the Virtual branch of the Endless. Though their civilization has become tied to their great starfaring Arks, Tchinomy remains a powerful symbol both as a lesson in ecology and as a memory of the weak and grotesque forms the Vodyani had before Virtual technology allowed them to evolve beyond that. As a result, the Vodyani were driven into space by necessity and already have a long history as a ship-bound people. Tchinomy, the home planet of the Vodyani, was a poor yet temperate world, and the fragility of its environment meant it was soon depleted. She is also famous for her brother - the heretic Isyander Shumèd, who nearly destroyed the society when he led a revolt against his own people. The current hierarch is Isyara St Shaiad, famous for her rigor and intensity. This person, drawn from one of the powerful organizations that make up Vodyani society, is the ultimate authority for both religious and secular affairs. While there are many sprawling departments and executives within the Church of the Virtual Saints to handle the functions of running a starfaring civilization, there is only one ultimate authority - the Hierarch. Clothed in their great black suits of borrowed technology, Vodyani leaders pilot their great Arks across the star lanes, seeking other peoples to convert, control, and consume. These precursors quickly gained an aura of divinity in the eyes of the Vodyani, and are now worshiped as gods. Victims of a classic cycle of over-industrialization, the Vodyani were saved by technology culled from ruins of the Virtual Endless.
